The Effect of Atmospheric Pollution on Ecosystems

Historical context

During the 1970s and 1980s, a worrying fish mortality in the lakes of northern countries and a massive dieback of northern and eastern european forest appeared. What is less well known is that this phenomenom also affected French forests, in particular in the northeast of France. Therefore, numerous research works began in order to understand the causes, and the findings showed that acid rain significantly contributed to the observed damages. This acid rain is mainly due to the air pollutant emissions (sulfur and nitrogen) by industrial, automotive, and agricultural wastes in Europe.
